Carcassonne is a medieval fortified city in the Occitanie region, renowned as one of the best-preserved examples of military architecture in Europe. The "Cité of Carcassonne" is defined by its massive double ring of defensive walls and 52 watchtowers that rise above the Aude River valley. While the site's origins date back to pre-Roman times, its strategic importance reached its peak during the Middle Ages, particularly during the Albigensian Crusade. After the fortress lost its military significance in the 17th century and fell into disrepair, it was saved by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century through a comprehensive, albeit controversial, restoration project. Today, the Cité contains a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, the Basilica of Saint Nazaire, and the Château Comtal (Count's Castle). Along with the Canal du Midi that passes through the lower city, Carcassonne was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and stands as an enduring symbol of medieval history.
