Octeville was an independent municipality until 2000 and now forms the core of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin in Normandy, along with Cherbourg. The district is located on the heights southwest of the city center, offering a vast view over the Rade de Cherbourg, one of the world's largest artificial harbors. Historically, Octeville was more rural than the maritime Cherbourg, but it developed into a major residential and educational hub during the 20th century. It is home to the ESIX Normandie engineering school, among others. The region's economy is heavily influenced by shipping, submarine construction, and the nuclear industry (nearby La Hague). Octeville preserves part of its historic identity through the Saint-Martin Church, which has Romanesque origins. The surrounding landscape of the Normandy Bocage invites extensive hiking, while the district itself provides all the amenities of a modern urban center.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
