La Glacerie is a town steeped in industrial history, located in the Manche department of Normandy. Its name and fame stem from the Royal Glass Manufactory established in 1667 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert under King Louis XIV. This facility was revolutionary, as it mastered the art of casting large glass plates, leading to the creation of the mirrors for the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, thereby breaking the Venetian monopoly on glass. Geographically, La Glacerie sits on the elevated terrain overlooking the strategic port of Cherbourg, providing a green and hilly landscape compared to the coast. In 2016, it became a delegated commune within Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. Today, the town is a bustling commercial hub, home to one of the largest shopping districts in the region, while maintaining its residential charm. The Museum of Glass and Terroir stands as a testament to its royal industrial past, showcasing the techniques and social history of the workers who once made the town famous across Europe.
