Giverny is inseparably linked with the name of Claude Monet. The pioneer of Impressionism moved to this quiet village on the banks of the Epte in 1883 and spent the second half of his life here. In Giverny, he created not only hundreds of paintings but also his greatest living work of art: the garden. The garden consists of two parts: the Clos Normand, a lush flower garden in front of the house, and the water garden across the road. The latter is home to the famous water lily pond and the iconic green Japanese bridge draped in wisteria. The soft colors and the play of light captured by Monet in his late works are still palpable in the gardens today. Beside Monet's estate, Giverny hosts the Museum of Impressionism, which highlights the history of this movement, as well as numerous small galleries and studios in the village's flower-lined alleys.
