Écos is a historic village located in the Eure department of Normandy, specifically within the plateau of Vexin Normand. Since 2016, it has been the administrative center of the newly formed commune of Vexin-sur-Epte. The area has played a significant role in French history due to its location near the Epte river, which served as the traditional border between the Duchy of Normandy and the Kingdom of France. The village center is home to the Church of Saint-Denis, a building that dates back to the 12th century and reflects the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. The surrounding countryside is predominantly agricultural, characterized by extensive fields of wheat and rapeseed that paint the landscape in spirited colors during the spring and summer. Its proximity to Giverny, the home of impressionist painter Claude Monet, makes it a popular stop for tourists seeking a more authentic and quiet experience of the Norman countryside. The local culture is closely tied to its land, with weekly markets and seasonal festivals celebrating rural traditions.
