Situated just south of Caen, Fleury-sur-Orne is a community closely tied to the slow-moving waters of the Orne river. The town was formerly known as Allemagne until 1917, when it was renamed to honor the commune of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, which was entirely destroyed during the Battle of Verdun. It is mostly famous for its extensive underground stone quarries, which date back to the 11th century. During the summer of 1944, these massive subterranean caverns served as a vital refuge for thousands of local civilians sheltering from the intense bombardments of the Battle of Normandy. Today, parts of these caves are used for cultivating button mushrooms, maintaining a long-standing regional agricultural tradition. The green banks of the Orne river feature the Voie Verte, a dedicated cycling and walking path that connects directly to the coastline without car traffic. Visitors can also enjoy boating or kayaking on the calm river waters while observing the local waterfowl.
