Giberville is an emerging commune in the Calvados department of Normandy. Located immediately east of the city of Caen, it is an integral part of its urban area. The history of Giberville is closely linked to the region's industrial development, particularly iron ore mining in the 20th century. The town was home to workers from the nearby Mondeville steelworks (SMN), which significantly shaped the town's social fabric and architecture. Following the decline of heavy industry, Giberville successfully transformed and is now a modern residential community with excellent links to Caen's transport network. In recent years, the municipality has invested heavily in ecological urban development, creating new parks and building modern sports and leisure facilities. Despite its proximity to the large city, Giberville maintains its own cultural identity, fostered through local festivals and active community life. Historically, the area was also the site of fierce fighting during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, events now commemorated by several monuments.
