Colombelles is located in northwestern France in the Normandy region, directly on the northeastern outskirts of Caen. The town's 20th-century history is inseparable from the rise and fall of the Société Métallurgique de Normandie (SMN). For decades, the massive steelworks shaped the social and economic life of the community, as well as the skyline with its prominent cooling tower, which is preserved today as an industrial monument. Geographically, Colombelles sits on the banks of the Orne river and the canal from Caen to the sea. During World War II, the town was heavily destroyed due to its strategic industrial importance. After the closure of the steelworks in 1993, Colombelles underwent a remarkable transformation. The former industrial site now hosts innovative research centers, educational institutions, and modern residential areas. The town is a prime example of successful industrial reclamation and part of the dynamic Caen la Mer metropolitan area.
