Arromanches
Arromanches-les-Bains is a pivotal site of world history on the Calvados coast. The town became famous as the location of the artificial 'Mulberry B' harbor, constructed immediately after the Normandy landings in June 1944. Even today, the massive concrete caissons are visible in the sea, remnants of the logistics that secured the supplies for the liberation of Europe. These ruins give the beach a poignant atmosphere and make the scale of Operation Overlord tangible. The D-Day Museum (Musée du Débarquement), located right on the seafront, provides detailed insights into the harbor's construction and operation through models and films. On the cliffs overlooking the town, Arromanches 360 is a circular cinema showing an immersive documentary about the 100 days of the Battle of Normandy. From these cliffs, visitors can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view over Gold Beach and the English Channel. Beyond its historical significance, Arromanches is a characterful seaside resort with a lively pedestrian center filled with souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is a great place to sample Norman specialties like fresh seafood, cider, and Camembert. The town serves as an excellent base for exploring other D-Day sites, such as the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer or the Longues-sur-Mer battery. June is the most significant time for memorial visits, while summer is great for beachgoers.
