Wintzenheim is a quintessential Alsatian commune located just west of Colmar in the Haut-Rhin department. It is set at the edge of the Vosges mountains, where the plains meet the forested slopes. The town is a significant stop on the Alsace Wine Route, particularly famous for the 'Hengst' Grand Cru vineyard, known for its exceptional soil quality and world-class Gewürztraminer. Dominating the skyline is the Hohlandsbourg Castle, a massive 13th-century fortification that once protected the surrounding lands and now serves as a major cultural venue. Historically, Wintzenheim was a hub for the textile and brewing industries, which fueled its growth in the 19th century. Today, it gives a blend of medieval charm and modern amenities, with numerous hiking trails leading to the nearby ruins of Pflixbourg and Saint-Gilles. Its cultural identity is strongly Alsatian, with traditional festivals and a rich culinary scene featuring local cheeses and wines.
