Eguisheim (France)

Weather…

Eguisheim is distinguished by its unusual urban design, with streets radiating in concentric circles around the central octagonal castle and chapel. This arrangement follows the lines of the former medieval fortifications. The village is a multi-time winner of the national 'Grand Prix National du Fleurissement' for its exceptional floral decorations. At the heart of the village stands the Saint-Léon-IX fountain and chapel, dedicated to the local nobleman who became Pope in 1049. The village is surrounded by 339 hectares of vineyards, producing renowned Grand Cru wines such as Eichberg and Pfersigberg. The 'Sentier Viticole' (Wine Trail) provides an educational walk through the vines with explanations about grape varieties and local terroir. The narrow streets are filled with architectural details, including carved lintels and ancient guild signs on the half-timbered houses. Located just 5 km from Colmar, Eguisheim is a peaceful alternative to the larger tourist hubs. The village is particularly festive during the Fête des Vignerons in late August. It is best visited during the spring blooming season or in winter for its intimate and traditional Christmas market. Local gastronomy features traditional gingerbread and Munster cheese from the nearby valley.
