Oberhausbergen is a thriving municipality in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, situated on the slopes west of Strasbourg. Its name reflects its geography, derived from the Germanic words for 'houses on the hill'. This elevated position provided a natural vantage point that was militarily exploited in the late 19th century with the construction of Fort Frère (originally Fort Baden) as part of the strategic ring around Strasbourg. The town witnessed significant military engagement during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, an event that reshaped the local community. Today, Oberhausbergen is an integral part of the Eurométropole de Strasbourg, serving as a high-end residential suburb. It balances traditional Alsatian half-timbered architecture with modern housing developments and public facilities. The town is highly regarded for its green initiatives and outdoor recreation options, with numerous paths offering runners and walkers memorable views of the Strasbourg Cathedral and the distant Black Forest. Economically, it hosts various service-sector businesses while benefiting from its proximity to the European institutions and business hubs of the Alsatian capital.
