Mourmelon-le-Grand is a historic commune in the Marne department, internationally recognized as one of France's premier military hubs. The town's modern development was catalyzed in 1857 when Emperor Napoleon III established the Camp de Châlons (now known as Camp de Mourmelon) to serve as a massive training ground for the French Imperial Army. This strategic decision transformed a small village into a structured military city, with architecture specifically designed to accommodate high-ranking officers and large contingents of troops. Geographically, its location in the flat, chalky plains of the Champagne region provided the excellent environment for cavalry and, later, armored vehicle maneuvers. Mourmelon played a crucial role during both World Wars, serving as a frontline support and training base; today, the surrounding area is dotted with significant war memorials and cemeteries. The town's economy is inextricably linked to the ongoing operations of the military camp, which remains one of the largest in Europe. Despite its martial focus, Mourmelon-le-Grand maintains an animated civilian life with a strong sense of community and regional pride.
