Pompey is a town in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department of the Grand Est region, situated just north of Nancy. Its location is geographically significant as it lies at the confluence of the Meurthe and Moselle rivers, making it a historic crossroads for river transport. Pompey is internationally renowned for its contribution to the Eiffel Tower; between 1887 and 1889, the 'Pompey Ironworks' produced the puddled iron that forms the structure of Paris's most famous landmark. This industrial feat put the town at the forefront of the French industrial revolution. After the closure of the steel mills in the late 1980s, Pompey successfully transitioned into a modern economic hub. The former industrial site was redeveloped into the Eiffel Technology Park, attracting hundreds of new companies and creating thousands of jobs in logistics and high-tech sectors. Beyond its industrial identity, Pompey provides scenic waterfront paths and green spaces that highlight its riverine setting. The town remains an essential part of the Nancy metropolitan area, offering residents a mix of historical pride and modern infrastructure. Its heritage is meticulously preserved, and visitors can still see traces of the old steel giant that once defined the life of every family in the commune.
