Illzach is a significant municipality in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region, forming an integral part of the Mulhouse Alsace Agglomération. Its history is anchored in antiquity; archaeological excavations have revealed that it was once the Roman station of Uruncis, located on a major military and trade route. During the medieval period, it was a fiefdom of the Bishops of Strasbourg before passing through various noble hands. The city's modern identity was forged during the industrial boom of the 19th century, serving as a residential and industrial satellite to the manufacturing giant Mulhouse. Today, Illzach balances its industrial heritage with modern residential developments, offering its 15,000 residents a blend of urban convenience and environmental quality. The city is strategically positioned near major highway interchanges (A35 and A36), making it a key logistical hub in the Upper Rhine valley. Its cultural life is lively, with a focus on community centers and sports complexes that serve the diverse population of this Franco-German border region.
