Situated in the Fensch valley in the Moselle department, Hayange is a town whose entire modern history was forged by the iron and steel industry. For a long period, it served as the industrial epicenter of Lorraine, heavily influenced by the powerful de Wendel family of industrialists. The most visually striking landmark in the town is the statue of Notre-Dame-de-Hayange. Positioned on a forested hillside, this large statue of the Virgin Mary overlooks the deep valley and the massive, decommissioned blast furnaces that remain standing like monumental iron sculptures. Down in the town center, the neoclassical Église Saint-Martin stands as an architectural indicator of the community's past economic power. The gridded workers' housing estates built around the former plant grounds clearly display the functional residential architecture of the early 20th century. Today, Hayange is working to repurpose its industrial brownfields, finding new cultural and civic uses for the land. The slopes of the Fensch valley surrounding the town are thickly wooded, providing hiking trails that occasionally pass by historic iron ore mining remnants. Hayange appeals to travelers specifically interested in European industrial archaeology and unpolished urban history.
