Uckange is located in the Moselle department of Lorraine, situated on the banks of the Moselle river between Metz and Thionville. For most of the 20th century, the town was a vital center for the French steel industry, shaping the lives and identity of its inhabitants. Today, Uckange is world-famous for the U4 Blast Furnace, a colossal industrial vestige that has been preserved as a historic monument and cultural center. The U4 stands as a testament to the region's metallurgical past and is uniquely showcased at night through a brilliant light installation called 'Tous les Soleils'. Surrounding the industrial site is the 'Jardin des Traces' (Garden of Traces), a landscaped park that symbolically reclaims the former factory grounds with nature and art. Beyond its industrial roots, Uckange has successfully transitioned into a modern residential hub, benefiting from its proximity to the economic powerhouses of Luxembourg and nearby metropolitan centers. The Moselle river provides scenic beauty and recreational opportunities, with well-maintained paths for cycling and walking that connect the town to the broader region. The town is also noted for its diverse population, a legacy of the waves of immigration that fueled the steel factories. Uckange gives a powerful narrative of industrial rise, decline, and creative rebirth, making it a key stop for those exploring the heritage of northern France.
