Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg
Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg perches majestically on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 757 meters, overlooking the Alsatian plain in eastern France. Originally built in the 12th century by the Hohenstaufen dynasty, the fortress served a strategic role in monitoring trade routes for wine, grain, and salt. During the Thirty Years' War in 1633, Swedish troops besieged, looted, and set fire to the castle, leaving it in ruins for over two centuries. In 1899, the town of Sélestat gave the ruins to the German Emperor Wilhelm II, who commissioned architect Bodo Ebhardt to fully reconstruct the site between 1900 and 1908. This ambitious restoration project aimed to create a symbol of German imperial power in Alsace, blending late medieval architecture with early 20th-century sensibilities. Built from distinctive red Vosges sandstone, the castle now provides a detailed look at medieval life through its banquet halls, armories, and artillery platforms. From its defensive walls, visitors can enjoy panoramic views that reach as far as the Black Forest and the Alps on clear days.
