Saint-Étienne, located on the edge of the Massif Central in eastern France, is a city that has masterfully transitioned from an industrial powerhouse to a global design capital. During the 19th century, it was a focal point of French coal mining and heavy industry, world-famous for the production of arms, cycles, and silk ribbons. This industrial prowess led to the opening of France's first railway line in 1827, linking the city to the Loire River. Following the decline of the mining sector, Saint-Étienne reinvented itself by embracing design as a core driver for urban renewal and economic growth. In 2010, it became the only French city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design network. The former national arms factory was transformed into the Cité du Design, a modern hub for research, education, and innovation. Beyond its industrial roots, the city is home to one of the most significant collections of modern and contemporary art in France and gives immediate access to the Pilat Regional Natural Park. Saint-Étienne is also celebrated for its intense football culture, centered around the historic AS Saint-Étienne club and its iconic Geoffroy-Guichard stadium. Saint-Étienne hosted Olympic football matches in 2024 at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, nicknamed Le Chaudron, much loved by supporters.
