Lyon-Nord is defined by the La Croix-Rousse district, historically known as the hill that works, in contrast to the religious Fourviere hill. In the 19th century, it became the heart of Europe's silk industry, with architecture specifically designed to accommodate the tall looms of the canuts (silk weavers), featuring exceptionally high ceilings and windows. The area is famous for its traboules, hidden passageways through residential buildings that allowed weavers to transport delicate silk safely during rainy weather. In 1831, the district was the site of the Canut revolt, one of the earliest organized labor uprisings in industrial history. Today, the neighborhood maintains a bohemian atmosphere and is celebrated for its daily market on the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse. The slopes provide impressive views over the Saone River and the city center. The integration of urban art, such as the massive Mur des Canuts mural, makes the north a cultural landmark. Lyon-Nord seamlessly connects its industrial heritage with contemporary community life and sustainable urban growth, offering a unique blend of historical depth and modern lifestyle.

This walk takes you through the heart of Croix-Rousse, the hill of silk weavers. In the morning, we explore the fascinating history of the 'Canuts' through monumental murals and weaving museums. After lunch in a local bistro, we descend to Lyon's Roman roots and end the day at the famous Fresque des Lyonnais on the banks of the Saône.
This bike tour combines the Croix-Rousse hill with the vast Parc de la Tête d'Or. We start on the plateau, enjoy the descent to the Rhone banks, and explore Lyon's largest urban park. After a relaxed ride along the Saône riverfront, we return to the amphitheater and the historical slopes.
This car tour uses the cluster principle: we park at the top of Croix-Rousse for the silk history, then drive to the sprawling Tête d'Or park for nature, and finish on the historical slopes and Saône riverbank. This avoids unnecessary steep climbs while ensuring you see Lyon's top highlights comfortably.
