Clermont-Ferrand is located in central France, at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys, a dramatic chain of dormant volcanoes in the Auvergne region. The city reached its current form in 1731 after the merger of two formerly rival towns, Clermont and Montferrand. It is famous for its unique architecture built from black volcanic stone, known as Pierre de Volvic, which gives the Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption its striking dark appearance. The city's history stretches back to antiquity, as it was once the capital of the Arverni tribe under the name Nemossos; nearby, the Gallic leader Vercingetorix defeated Julius Caesar's legions at the Battle of Gergovia. In 1095, Pope Urban II held the Council of Clermont here, where he famously called for the First Crusade. Industrially, Clermont-Ferrand is synonymous with the Michelin tire company, founded in 1889 and still headquartered in the city. Beyond its industrial roots, it is a prominent academic center with a historic university and hosts the world's most prestigious international short film festival annually.
