💡 Tips
- Take the cable car up the Puy de Sancy and walk the final 20 minutes to the summit for a spectacular 360° view. Go early to avoid the clouds.
- Even if you're not taking a spa treatment, it's worth visiting the thermal baths (Thermes du Mont-Dore) just to admire the impressive 19th-century architecture.
- In winter, parking in the centre can be difficult. Use the free shuttle buses (navettes) that connect the different parts of the resort and the ski slopes.
- The hiking trails are well-marked, but mountain weather can change quickly. Always bring waterproofs and layers.
- Check the opening status of roads and trails outside the summer season, as snow can often block access until late spring.
🍽 Food
Enjoy this hearty dish of potatoes, fresh Tomme cheese, and garlic in an auberge (country inn) after a hike.
Buy this famous local cheese directly from a farm (ferme) or at the Friday market.
Try a blueberry tart (Tarte aux Myrtilles) from a patisserie, or look for locally made jam.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The large Friday morning market is the best place to buy local produce like cheese, cured meats, and honey.
Look for shops selling 'Produits Régionaux' for a curated selection of local delicacies and crafts.
Take a short but steep hike from the town centre to this impressive waterfall.
Take the historic funicular railway and enjoy the peace and views from this wooded plateau above the town.
Drive a short distance to this high-altitude lake for a peaceful walk and memorable scenery, especially at sunset.
Water temperature…
Le Mont-Dore is a prestigious spa and mountain resort located at the foot of the Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in the Massif Central. Known since Roman times for its thermal springs, the town flourished during the 19th century, leaving behind a legacy of grand Belle Époque architecture. The Thermal Baths, with their Neo-Byzantine interiors, are a designated historic monument and continue to treat respiratory and rheumatic ailments with volcanic waters. In the winter, the town transforms into a family-oriented ski resort, offering slopes for all levels and access to the Sancy area. In summer, the region becomes a hiker's paradise with trails leading to volcanic craters, mountain lakes, and waterfalls like the Grande Cascade. The Funiculaire du Capucin, the oldest electric funicular in France from 1898, provides a scenic ride to the forested plateaus. Gastronomy is central to the experience here, featuring hearty Auvergne dishes like Truffade and local cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire and Bleu d'Auvergne. The resort is accessible by car from Clermont-Ferrand or via local bus services. Visit in late spring for blooming mountain meadows or in January for peak skiing conditions.
