The Art Crafts Biennial of Brioude highlights exceptional artisans in a city officially recognized for its artistic heritage.
Brioude, a town rich in history in the heart of Auvergne, is situated on the fertile Allier River in the Haute-Loire department. Its roots date back to Gallo-Roman times, but its true golden age was in the Middle Ages as a significant pilgrimage site in honor of Saint Julian. The architectural landmark of the town is the Basilica of Saint-Julien, the largest Romanesque church in the region, famous for its polychrome stones and exceptional capitals. Geographically, Brioude forms the transition between the fertile Limagne plain and the volcanic mountains of the Massif Central. Economically, the town was long a trading center for agricultural products and wine. A special cultural heritage is the Hôtel de la Dentelle, which preserves the tradition of handmade lace. Today, Brioude attracts visitors not only through its sacred heritage but also through its spirited art scene, particularly in contemporary stained glass and painting, as well as the pristine nature of the Allier valley.
