Kafta-Sheraro National Park is located in the northwestern part of the Tigray Region in Ethiopia, spanning an area of roughly 5,000 square kilometers. The park was officially gazetted in 2007 to safeguard one of the most northerly populations of African elephants in East Africa. Geographically, it is bounded to the north by the Tekeze River, which provides a essential permanent water source in an otherwise semi-arid landscape. The terrain consists primarily of dry savannah, acacia woodlands, and rocky hills, supporting a diverse range of fauna including lions, leopards, greater kudu, and ostriches. A key ecological feature is the transboundary migration of elephants between Ethiopia and Eritrea, making this park a crucial conservation corridor. Historically, the proximity to international borders has led to security challenges that impact wildlife management. Today, it remains a critical ecosystem for the preservation of biodiversity within the Sahelian transition zone.

Best season
The dry season from October to April is best for elephant sightings as they gather at remaining water sources. During the rainy season they disperse widely and are harder to find.
Best time of day
Early morning is well-suited when elephants come to water sources. Late afternoon also provides good chances as animals emerge from shade.
Etiquette
Keep at least 50 meters from elephants to avoid disturbing them. Do not leave your vehicle inside the park and follow ranger instructions.
What to bring
Binoculars and a camera with telephoto lens are essential for elephant viewing. Sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are vital due to high temperatures.
Getting there
The park is in northern Ethiopia, about 180 km northwest of Mekele. Access is usually by 4x4 vehicle; road conditions can be challenging.
What to expect
Although elephants are the main draw, they can roam far. Plan for multiple days and also explore other wildlife like antelopes and baboons.
