Senkele Wildlife Sanctuary (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Senkele Swayne's Hartebeest Sanctuary is a small yet ecologically vital protected area in central Ethiopia, situated near the town of Shashemene. Established in 1971, the sanctuary's primary mission is the preservation of Swayne's Hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus swaynei), an endangered subspecies endemic to Ethiopia. The terrain consists of open acacia savannah and grassland, providing a handy grazing habitat for these majestic antelopes. Despite its modest size of approximately 54 square kilometers, the sanctuary supports a significant density of wildlife, including Oribi, Bohor reedbuck, and over 190 documented bird species. Senkele is a cornerstone of Ethiopian wildlife conservation, housing the most viable population of Swayne's Hartebeest remaining in the wild. It has visitors one of the best wildlife viewing experiences in the Rift Valley, characterized by close-up encounters with animals in a pristine and manageable natural setting.
