Ambo, historically known as Hagere Hiwot, is a significant town in the West Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters, it is globally famous for its natural mineral water, exported under the brand name 'Ambo Water'. The town is also a major educational center, hosting Ambo University, one of the country's oldest academic institutions. Geographically, Ambo is surrounded by photogenic mountainous scenery, including the nearby Wonchi crater lake, widely considered one of Ethiopia's most beautiful spots. The town's economy thrives on fertile soils where cereals and oilseeds are cultivated. Historically, Ambo was a retreat for the Ethiopian nobility and Emperor Haile Selassie, who maintained a summer residence here. Today, the town is a dynamic hub for agriculture, education, and tourism, aided by its good road connections to the capital city, Addis Ababa.
