Lake Shala (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Lake Shala is the deepest lake in Ethiopia, situated within a massive volcanic caldera in the central Rift Valley as part of the Abijatta-Shalla National Park. Reaching a maximum depth of approximately 266 meters, it fills a depression formed millions of years ago by volcanic collapse. The water is highly alkaline and saline, creating an environment where few fish species can survive, yet it supports specialized algae that sustain diverse birdlife. The lake features nine islands, with 'Pelican Island' serving as one of the most significant breeding grounds for Great White Pelicans in East Africa. Numerous hot springs dot the shoreline, releasing steam and sulfurous gases that highlight the region's ongoing geothermal activity. Its rugged cliffs and deep blue, often turbulent waters distinguish it from the shallower lakes nearby. Geologically, it remains a testament to the powerful tectonic forces shaping the East African Rift system.
