Yirgalem, formerly known as Dilla or Abosto, is a historical town in the Sidama Region of southern Ethiopia. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,770 meters, it served as the capital of the former Sidamo Province until 1968, when the administrative seat was moved to Awasa. The town is surrounded by lush vegetation and is considered one of the primary centers for the cultivation of high-quality Sidamo coffee. Geographically, Yirgalem is located near the Gidabo River and benefits from fertile volcanic soils. The town's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, with coffee, enset (false banana), and various fruits being the main products. The architectural style and urban structure reflect the colonial era of the Italian occupation as well as subsequent Ethiopian urban development. Yirgalem remains an important commercial hub in southern Ethiopia, preserving a rich cultural identity of the Sidama people.
