Melka Kunture is one of the world's most significant Paleolithic sites, located about 50 kilometers south of Addis Ababa on the upper reaches of the Awash River. The site comprises numerous layers documenting continuous occupation over a period of approximately 1.8 million years. Researchers have discovered thousands of stone tools here, such as hand axes and scrapers from the Oldowan and Acheulean cultures, as well as fossils of extinct animals like elephants and hippopotamuses. Particularly significant are the finds of hominin fossils, including Homo erectus and archaic Homo sapiens. An open-air museum on site presents the excavation sites in their original state and explains the development of early human technology. The geological stability of the region has contributed to the excellent preservation of the archaeological layers. Melka Kunture provides scientists with valuable information about the environmental conditions and survival strategies of our ancestors.
