The geology of the area is of volcanic origin, evident in the nearby crater lakes and the fertile yet dry reddish soils that dominate the landscape. Historically, this territory has been a central settlement area for the Borena community of the Oromo people, whose traditional water management systems are vital for survival in this parched environment. The vegetation consists primarily of acacia woodlands and thorn-bush savannahs, adapted to extreme seasonal fluctuations in rainfall. Today, the mountain serves as a strategic landmark for regional trade and remains a focal point for biodiversity conservation efforts in East Africa.
