Historical site
The relics of the Forbes Reef Mine, located within the current Malolotja Nature Reserve, bear witness to the birth of mining in Eswatini. In 1885, Tom McLachlan discovered the first gold deposits here, triggering a brief but intense gold rush in the northwestern mountains. The area was named after the Forbes family, who obtained the mining concession and introduced modern mining techniques to the kingdom. Among the most impressive remains are the ruins of an old crushing mill and the foundations of the country's first hydroelectric power station, built around 1900 to power the mine. Although the gold reserves were soon exhausted, Forbes Reef laid the foundation for the region's industrial development. Today, the site is a significant historical monument, offering hikers and history enthusiasts insight into the harsh living conditions of the early miners. The disused shafts and decaying machinery are silent witnesses to an era that permanently transformed Eswatini.
