St. John's Church in Valga, built between 1787 and 1816, is an architectural gem located on the border between Estonia and Latvia. It was designed by the famous Riga architect Christoph Haberland, a leading representative of Classicism in the Baltic region. The church is unique in Estonia for its oval floor plan, which provides exceptional acoustics and an unusual aesthetic. The construction was funded by citizen donations and state support, reflecting Valga's importance as a commercial hub at the time. The bell tower, topped with a Baroque helmet, defines the town's silhouette and is visible from afar. Inside, the church houses a valuable organ built in 1867 by Friedrich Ladegast, regarded as one of the finest instruments in the country. Today, St. John's Church serves not only as a place of worship but also as a popular venue for concerts and cultural events, drawing visitors from both neighboring nations.
