Taagepera Castle (Estonia)

Weather…

Taagepera Castle, situated in Valga County, is widely regarded as one of the most magnificent masterpieces of Art Nouveau and National Romanticism in Estonia. Built between 1907 and 1912 to the designs of architect Otto Wildau for Baron Hugo von Stryk, the castle features a striking asymmetrical composition. Its massive granite walls and a prominent 40-meter-high round tower make it a dominant landmark overlooking the surrounding dense forests. Remarkably, the building remained untouched during the 1905 unrest that claimed many other manors, which accounts for its exceptional state of preservation. After Estonia gained independence in 1920, the castle was repurposed as a sanatorium, specializing in pulmonary treatments for several decades. Today, the meticulously restored structure operates as a luxury hotel and wedding venue, housing a museum dedicated to the estate's rich history. The grand interiors, complete with original fireplaces and intricate wood carvings, provide a vivid window into the wealth and artistic sensibilities of the early 20th-century nobility.
