Tõrva Castle Ruins (Estonia)

Weather…

The Helme castle ruins, located near the town of Tõrva in southern Estonia, are among the most significant historical landmarks in the region. The original fortress was constructed in the 14th century by the Livonian Order on a steep hill to command the strategic route leading toward Latvia. Known for its formidable walls built from fieldstones and limestone, the castle's remnants still stand as impressive fragments today. Its military history came to a violent end in 1658 during the Northern Wars, when Swedish forces blew up the structure to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, leaving it in its present ruined state. Beneath the castle hill lie the famous Helme Caves, a system of sandstone caverns that were manually expanded to serve as a hideout for locals during various wars. The ruins offer sweeping views of the rolling Mulgimaa landscape, attracting both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. A nearby ancient sacrificial spring indicates the site's significance long before the arrival of the Crusader orders. Today, the area is maintained as a park and serves as a backdrop for community festivals.
