Rapla St. Mary Magdalene Church (Estonia)

Weather…

St. Mary Magdalene Church in Rapla is an architectural gem and one of the largest rural churches in Estonia. The current building was constructed between 1899 and 1901, replacing an older medieval church that had become too small for the growing congregation. Designed by architect Rudolf von Engelhardt in the Neo-Romanesque style, the church is noted for its monumental appearance and two distinctive towers that are visible from far across the surrounding landscape. The use of local limestone gives the building a unique texture and color. Inside, the church can accommodate up to 3,000 people and has impressive acoustics, making it a prime venue for music festivals, such as the annual Rapla Church Music Festival. Valuable interior features include the 17th-century Baroque altar and pulpit from Christian Ackermann's workshop, which were preserved from the previous structure. The church serves as both a spiritual center and a significant cultural monument, highlighting Rapla's historical importance.
