Zagazig, the capital of the Sharqia Governorate, is situated in the fertile eastern Nile Delta and serves as a primary hub for Egypt's cotton and grain trade. The city was established in the 19th century during the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha to support the development of irrigation projects and agricultural administration in the region. It is located in close proximity to the ruins of ancient Bubastis, which was a significant religious center dedicated to the cat goddess Bastet during the Pharaonic period. Today, Zagazig is a prominent educational center, hosting Zagazig University, which was founded in 1974 and has since become one of the largest universities in the country. The city functions as a critical junction in the national railway network, linking Cairo to the Suez Canal cities and other parts of the Delta. Its economy is deeply rooted in agriculture, particularly in the processing of long-staple cotton, though modern industries like food manufacturing have grown significantly. The urban landscape reflects a blend of colonial-era administrative structures and rapidly developing modern residential areas, catering to a growing population.
