Khanka is a bustling city in the Qalyubia Governorate, located on the northeastern edge of the Greater Cairo metropolitan area. The city was founded in the 14th century by the Mamluk Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad, originally envisioned as a religious retreat and center. Today, Khanka is nationally known as the site of the Al-Khanka Hospital, the oldest and largest psychiatric institution in the Middle East, which plays a significant social role. Geographically, the city benefits from its strategic position near the desert, which has led to the establishment of large industrial zones housing chemical and construction material plants. Despite industrial expansion, Khanka preserves historical traces from the Mamluk era, including the architectural remains of ancient mosques. As part of the Cairo commuter belt, Khanka is experiencing rapid population growth and continuous urban development while solidifying its industrial importance in the region.
