Qalawun Complex (Egypt)

Weather…

The Qalawun Complex, situated in the heart of Al-Muizz Street in Cairo, is a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture built between 1284 and 1285. Commissioned by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun, the complex uniquely integrates a madrasa (school), a mausoleum, and a bimaristan (hospital). The bimaristan was particularly revolutionary for its time, providing free medical care to all citizens regardless of status or gender, and featuring specialized wards for various ailments. The mausoleum's design is noted for its octagonal interior structure and rich ornamentation, drawing comparisons to the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. It features intricate marble mosaics, mother-of-pearl inlays, and fine stucco carvings. Despite centuries of urban changes, the complex remains one of the most complete and well-preserved examples of medieval Islamic institutional architecture in the Middle East.
