Mansoura is the capital of the Dakahlia Governorate, located in the Nile Delta on the eastern branch of the river, known as the Damietta branch. Founded in 1219 by the Ayyubids, the city gained historical fame during the Battle of Mansoura in 1250, where King Louis IX of France was captured during the Seventh Crusade. Today, Mansoura is recognized as one of Egypt's most prominent medical and scientific hubs, particularly through the specialized urology and nephrology centers at Mansoura University. The city acts as a lively commercial center for the fertile delta's agricultural products and hosts various industries, including textiles and food processing. Architecturally, Mansoura features a blend of historical landmarks, such as Dar Ibn Luqman (the house where Louis IX was imprisoned), and modern commercial districts. It is also regarded as the cultural heart of the region, boasting an active arts and literary community.
