Nile Delta Agricultural Region (Egypt)

Weather…

The Nile Delta is one of the world's most fertile regions, serving as the agricultural backbone of Egypt. Starting north of Cairo, where the Nile splits into the Rosetta and Damietta branches, the delta spans roughly 22,000 square kilometers of lush greenery. For millennia, nutrient-rich silt deposits have enabled the intensive cultivation of wheat, rice, maize, and world-renowned long-staple Egyptian cotton. Today, this region provides food for nearly half of Egypt's population and is critical for the nation's export economy. Since the completion of the Aswan High Dam, natural flooding has been replaced by a sophisticated perennial irrigation network of canals. However, the region faces modern environmental threats such as soil salinization and rising sea levels in the Mediterranean. The landscape remains a unique blend of traditional farming methods, including the use of water buffalo, alongside increasing industrial mechanization.
