Tisvildeleje is located on the north coast of Zealand and has been a preferred retreat for the Copenhagen elite and artists since the late 19th century. The town has retained its village charm with thatched houses and small cafes. The main beach is expansive, featuring fine white sand and lined with easy on the eye colorful bathhouses. The water is considered among the cleanest in Denmark. Directly adjacent to the town is Tisvilde Hegn, Denmark's fifth-largest forest area. The forest is famous for the 'Troldeskoven' (Magic Forest), where 100 to 200-year-old pines have been bizarrely deformed by the wind and sandy soil. The Helen's Spring (Helenekilde) is also located here, which according to legend possesses miraculous powers. Every year on June 23rd (Sankt Hans), people pilgrimage here. The archaeological site of the sunken settlement Tibirke Lunde bears witness to the constant threat of sand drifts in earlier centuries. Culturally, Tisvildeleje gives events like the 'Musik i Lejet' festival in July, which takes place directly on the beach and is very popular. Gastronomy ranges from fish restaurants at the harbor to high-end Nordic cuisine. Access from Copenhagen is convenient by local train (Gribskovbanen) in about an hour. The best time to visit is summer for beach activities, but autumn also has peace for extensive forest walks.
