Carlsberg Byen, or Carlsberg City, is a spirited new district in Copenhagen built on the historic grounds of the former Carlsberg brewery. After the main production was moved to Jutland in 2008, this area in the Vesterbro district became one of Denmark's largest urban development projects. The architecture skillfully blends heritage-listed industrial buildings, such as the Elephant Tower, with modern high-rises and sustainable residential spaces. Today, it houses apartments, offices, educational institutions like the University College Copenhagen campus, and numerous cafes and boutiques. The district's landmark is the four life-sized granite elephants at the entrance, commissioned in 1901 by J.C. Jacobsen. Despite its modern transformation, the site remains deeply connected to brewing history through the 'Visit Carlsberg' visitor center. The district is designed according to the 'short-distance city' principle, prioritizing pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit. It serves as a prime example of successfully repurposing industrial brownfields into high-quality urban living environments.
