Tisvilde Hegn (Denmark)

Weather…

Tisvilde Hegn is Denmark's fifth-largest forest, stretching along the North Zealand coast between Tisvildeleje and Asserbo. The forest has a compelling origin; it was artificially planted starting in the 18th century to halt a catastrophic sand drift that had previously buried entire villages and farmlands under massive dunes. Today, Tisvilde Hegn is characterized by a mix of pine and beech trees, set against a wild coastal backdrop. A standout feature is the 'Troldeskoven' (Troll Forest), where ancient Scots pines have grown into bizarre, twisted shapes due to the wind and nutrient-poor soil. Beyond its natural beauty, the area contains significant historical sites, such as the 12th-century ruins of Asserbo Castle and the remnants of the sand-buried village of Torup. As part of the National Park of the Royal North Zealand, the forest provides a protected habitat for many rare insect and plant species.
