Gilleleje is the northernmost point of the island of Zealand and one of the few places in Denmark that still maintains a significant active fishing fleet. The harbor is the pulsating heart of the town, where fresh fish is landed daily and sold directly in the smokehouses and fish shops. Visitors can watch the fishermen at work or enjoy 'Stjerneskud' (an open-faced fish sandwich) in the numerous quayside restaurants. Historically, Gilleleje gained great significance during World War II. In October 1943, the town's residents helped save hundreds of Danish Jews from deportation by smuggling them across the Øresund to Sweden in fishing boats. An exhibition in Gilleleje Church commemorates these courageous acts. The 'Kierkegaard Path' leads along the coast to the monument of the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who often visited the town to reflect on life. Gilbjerg Hoved, the northernmost tip, features hiking trails with views of the Swedish coast and is an important observation point for migratory birds in spring and autumn. Gilleleje also features two beautiful beaches, the East and West beaches, separated by the harbor. Access is typically by train from Copenhagen or Helsingør. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the 'Kulturhavn Gilleleje' combines a cinema, museum, and concerts in one location.
