Great Belt Bridge (Denmark)

Weather…

The Great Belt Fixed Link is a massive infrastructure project connecting the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen across the Great Belt strait. The link consists of a 6.8-kilometer eastern suspension bridge, a sub-sea railway tunnel, and a 6.6-kilometer western box girder bridge for both road and rail traffic. After a construction period of ten years, the rail link opened in 1997, followed by the road link in 1998. With a main span of 1,624 meters, the East Bridge was the longest suspension bridge outside of Asia at the time of its completion and remains a masterpiece of modern engineering. Before the bridge was built, crossing the Great Belt required a ferry journey, which often caused significant delays for travelers and goods. Today, the fixed link allows vehicles to cross in just a few minutes, greatly enhancing economic integration and mobility between eastern and western Denmark. The massive concrete pylons stand 254 meters above sea level, making them some of the tallest structures in the Kingdom of Denmark.
