Næstved is located in southern Zealand at the mouth of the Suså River and is one of Denmark's oldest towns, first mentioned in 1135. The cityscape is characterized by medieval brick architecture, including St. Peter's Church, which is considered one of the finest examples of Nordic Gothic style. A central element of the city's history is the Herlufsholm School, a former monastery converted into a prestigious boarding school in 1565. Economically, Næstved was long defined by its paper industry and the port at Karrebæksminde, providing access to the Baltic Sea. Today, the city serves as a primary commercial and administrative hub for southern Zealand. The nearby Gavnø Castle, famous for its park and extensive painting collection, makes the region a popular tourist destination. Næstved has successfully preserved its historical core while developing a modern infrastructure to support its role as a regional capital.
