Horsens is located in East Jutland at the head of the Horsens Fjord, with a settlement history dating back to the 12th century. During the 19th century, the city evolved into a major industrial hub in Denmark, a heritage still reflected in the architecture of its former factory buildings. Internationally, Horsens is renowned for its former state prison, which has been converted into an award-winning prison museum providing deep insights into the Danish penal system. Beyond its industrial roots, the city has emerged as a significant cultural center, frequently hosting large-scale international concerts and festivals. The famous explorer Vitus Bering was born here in 1681, and his legacy is honored by monuments throughout the city center. Its geographical location between rolling hills and the fjord makes Horsens a key logistical node along the E45 European motorway, connecting northern and central Denmark.
