Nyborg Castle on the island of Funen is one of the most historically significant castle complexes in Denmark. It was built around the year 1170 by Knud Prislavsen and served for centuries as a venue for major political events. It was the meeting place of the "Danehof," the first Danish parliament, and in 1282, King Erik Klipping signed Denmark's first constitution within the castle walls. The fortress was strategically crucial for controlling the Great Belt and served as a royal residence until the 16th century. During the Swedish-Danish wars in the 17th century, the complex was heavily damaged and lost its military importance after the Battle of Nyborg in 1659. Large parts of the original defensive walls and the moat are still preserved today. The castle underwent extensive restoration in the early 20th century and now functions as a museum depicting royal history and medieval life in Denmark.
