Trelleborg near Slagelse is one of the best-preserved Viking ring fortresses in Denmark and an outstanding example of military architecture from the Viking Age. The fortification was built around 980 AD under King Harald Bluetooth and likely served as a barracks or fortified base to control shipping routes on the Great Belt. The fortress is characterized by its mathematical precision: the circular rampart has a diameter of 136 meters and was once surrounded by 16 precisely arranged longhouses inside and 15 more outside the walls. Today's museum site includes, alongside the archaeological remains, a reconstructed longhouse built in 1942 according to the latest scientific insights. Visitors can immerse themselves in the Viking world, view archaeological finds such as weapons, jewelry, and tools, and take part in living history demonstrations. Trelleborg was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
