Masisi is a town and territory located in the North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The region is situated in the volcanic mountains northwest of Lake Kivu, at an altitude of approximately 1,600 to 2,000 meters above sea level. Due to its cool climate and rolling green hills, the area is often referred to as the 'Switzerland of Africa.' Masisi is the most significant livestock farming center in the eastern part of the country and is famous for producing the traditional Goma cheese. Agriculture also includes the cultivation of potatoes, beans, and maize, which supply the provincial capital of Goma. Historically, the region has been the site of numerous conflicts involving armed groups, which has hindered economic development despite the wealth of natural resources. The infrastructure consists largely of unpaved roads that are difficult to traverse during the rainy season. The ethnic composition is diverse, with Hunde, Hutu, and Tutsi communities shaping the local culture and political landscape.
